Priory Avenue Surgery statement

Since September 2016 GP services at Priory Avenue Surgery have been provided by One Medical Group. There have been ongoing issues relating to staffing and service delivery and whilst some improvements have been made, One Medical Group has found it difficult to recruit permanent GPs and other staff. By mutual agreement Berkshire West Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and One Medical Group have therefore decided to terminate the contract for Priory Avenue.

The CCG’s priority is to ensure that patients receive high quality general practice services from surgeries that are large enough to provide modern primary care and be viable in the long-term. The current registered list size of just over 6,000 patients is considered to be too small to attract staff and offer the full range of primary care services going forward. Berkshire West CCG has therefore taken the decision that the best solution for patients is to close Priory Avenue Surgery and invite patients to register with a range of surgeries in the area who have the capacity to take on new patients without compromising existing patient services.

We have written to all patients to inform them of the closure and advise which surgeries are accepting new patients within their locality. Letters advise patients of the process to follow and our Patient Advice and Liaison Service are able to support patients if required. We are also holding two patient information events at local venues.

Patients are being asked to register with alternative surgeries by mid-June to allow any remaining patients to be allocated a new GP practice by the CCG before the closure of Priory Avenue on 30th June 2018. This will ensure that no patients are left without access to primary health care.

Dr Cathy Winfield, Chief Officer at Berkshire West CCG said, “It is always a difficult decision to recommend the closure of a surgery but we feel in the circumstances that Priory Avenue patients will be best served by being able to access care from another surgery within their locality. We will be working closely with local practices, GPs and patients to make sure that everyone continues to have access to high quality general practice services.”

A spokesperson for One Medical Group said: “We have been in discussions with North West Reading CCG since last summer over our Priory Avenue contract. The practice will continue to operate as normal and provide a full service to patients from Priory Avenue Surgery until our contract end date of 30th June. We would like to thank our dedicated team for their service to patients”.
