Extended GP access during evenings and weekends

In 2016 NHS England published the General Practice Forward View, their vision for primary care, which included a commitment to improve access for patients, including appointments at evenings and weekends.

Refreshed guidance in February 2018, means that from 1 October 2018 patients will have access to appointments during the evenings and at weekends and bank holidays, at a time that is most convenient to them.

Dr Andy Ciercierski, Berkshire West CCG GP Lead said: “By offering appointments in the evenings and at the weekend, we aim to deliver greater accessibility to patients who find it difficult to attend during regular hours. Patients wanting to use the enhanced access service will need to be registered with a local GP surgery and will be able to book these appointments in the usual way through their GP practice.

Enhanced Access appointments may take place at a patient’s normal GP surgery or at another local surgery. As always we would ask that if you are due to see a doctor but need to cancel for any reason, that you let your GP practice know so that we can offer the appointment to another patient.”
